Ex Liberian Chief Justice, 3 family members get life imprisonment for murder

Gloria Musu Scott, the former Chief Justice of Liberia, and three of her family members were sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of their niece Charlotte Musu.

The incident happened at Ms. Scott’s home in Brewerville, northwest Liberia, in February last year. It caused a significant trial that resulted in a life sentence.

In June of last year, the four defendants were taken into custody and charged in the matter of Charlotte Musu’s mysterious death. At first, Ms. Scott claimed her niece had died tragically as a result of an attack on her home by intruders.

After a five-month trial, however, the former chief justice and her family members were found guilty of murder, conspiracy, and falsely notifying law enforcement by the Monrovia court in the capital.

Since Liberia abolished the death penalty in July of last year, the accused have been given life sentences by the court. The defense team for Ms. Scott has indicated that they will appeal the verdict in order to maintain their client’s innocence.

This indictment has sent shockwaves across the country, sparking discussions on the legal system and the consequences for Liberia’s political environment. The former chief justice held this position from 1997 until 2003.
